Our History
Our story officially begins in 1980, when Terry MacRae acquired Hornblower Tours in Berkeley, California. However, the legacy of our portfolio dates back nearly 100 years, beginning with the founding of Boston Harbor Cruises in 1926.
1926
Boston Harbor Cruises is founded in Boston, Massachusetts.
1980
Hornblower Tours purchased by Terry MacRae in Berkeley, California.
1993
Hornblower Marine Services (HMS) spins off to focus on casino boat and ferry operations. HMS Ferries, Inc. expands to government contracting work and the development of high-speed ferry systems.
1996
Hornblower purchases John Wayne's legendary yacht, Wild Goose, offering public and private cruises from its Newport Beach port.
1999
The Bateaux, Manhattan's only all-glass, European-inspired vessel, cruises for the first time with Hornblower.
2006
Alcatraz Cruises, a Hornblower subsidiary, begins cruises to Alcatraz Island in San Francisco after being awarded a National Park Commission contract.
2008
Statue Cruises, a Hornblower subsidiary, begins cruises to Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island Immigration Museum as part of its National Park Service contract.
2009
Seaward Services is founded in New Albany, Indiana.
2009
Alcatraz Cruises designed and built the first hybrid ferry in the United States, which reduces fuel consumption by 75%.
2014
Hornblower Niagara Cruises begins tours in Niagara Gorge with two state-of-the-art catamarans after securing a 30-year lease from the Niagara Parks Commission to operate boat tour services on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.
2017
NYC Ferry by Hornblower begins operations on May 1, 2017.
2019
The Gee's Bend Ferry operates the first zero-emission, all-electric passenger/vehicle ferry in the U.S.
2020
HMS Ferries Inc. named operator of Puerto Rico Ferry Service.
2023
Anchor Operating System becomes an independent division within Hornblower, offering advanced digital ticketing solutions to support both Hornblower's businesses and its external partners.
2025
City Cruises launches City Cruises Live, a live entertainment series that brings notable musical artists, celebrity chefs, sports legends, and other celebrities and entertainers onboard.
2025
Hornblower Group and Travel + Leisure Co. form long-term marketing partnership focused on delivering unforgettable travel experiences.
